To get a little more clarification on what entry-level certifications might be right for you, could you tell us what year of school you're currently in (when do you get your degree?) and maybe what country you're in? Interesting question. I don't know how higher education institutions view professional certification in today's market. Anyone here from academia that can comment? It is interesting to think about how professional certification could drive acceptance to a university.

Don't you think a graduate who has a certification has a better chance of getting an acceptance than a graduate who doesn't have one?

Hi Varun:

Not necessarily. Certain certifications might be advantageous, but most CS school admissions staff will probably be more apt to consider what specific projects you've worked on. (Note: These don't have to pertain to work. In fact, if you implemented a network or something like that for a charity organization, that would be viewed as very impressive.) Because they want to determine your knowledge and potential, they'll want to know what you've already done.
